English translation

Day has dawned upon the moon

Day has dawned upon the moon, and my Lord alone remains

People visit Muhammad; as for me, he dwells in my heart

Day has dawned upon my heart, until I behold Him with my own eyes

You are my Guide, O Lord; You are fitter to lead me than myself

The light rises sparkling from the dome of the glorious Arab

You plunged us into this state and You tried us, O Muhammad!

I drowned my sight in His sight and passed away from all that passes

I realised that nothing but Him is, and went my way serene

O you who stand at the Zamzam spring, let me drink my fill

Muhammad is our beloved, our gracious prophet!

Whoever reproaches me with the fire of Love, let him take it from me

I will sell it to him cheap, so that he may taste it and understand me at last

There is no Love without Union, but the price of Union is very high

The draught is sealed and the station very high

The people of Love told me: ’If God has made Love your trial,

know that it is a very high station, much coveted; the People of the Book were left amazed by it’

Enraptured in God I am, not mad; the states pass through me,

I was able to see the Guarded Tablet; God’s bounty came before me

People accuse me of innovation, yet my path has always been rooted in the tradition

If you are right with your Lord, then you know that no harm comes from creatures.
