Sayings of Sidi 'Ali al-'Imrani (al-Jamal): Sufi quotations
Contents
Sidi ’Ali ibn ’Abd Allah al-’Imrani al-Hasani, known as al-Jamal (d. 1203), founder of the Jamaliyya path in Fes, master of the Moroccan hadra; not to be confused with Sidi Jamal al-Qadiri Boutchich.
al-Jamal: attending to the love of the Friend
The true way of harming the enemy is to attend to the love of the Friend; whereas if you busy yourself making war on the enemy, he will have got what he wanted from you, and you will at the same time have lost the occasion to love the Friend.
al-Jamal: everything on earth is but dust
Let everything between Thee and me be cultivated, and let there be between me and the worlds nothing but desert! If Thy love is assured, everything is easy, for everything on earth is but earth.
’Ali ben ’Abd Allah al-’Imrani al-Hasani, known as al-Jamal: aspire to the delights of prayer
While others concern themselves with worship, concern yourself with the Worshipped; if they busy themselves with love, busy yourself with the Beloved; while they aspire to work miracles, aspire to the delights of prayer; and while they multiply their devotions, devote yourself to your most generous Lord.
