Wird

The personal litany: the portion of invocation prescribed by the guide, recited each day at a set time.

Wird originally means the coming to the watering-place, then the regular portion one grants oneself there: in Sufi language it is the daily litany prescribed by the guide, a formula of invocation to be recited every day at fixed times, most often morning and evening. The dhikr is the principle; the wird is its measured dose.

Tradition insists on the received character of the practice: the wird is not chosen at the disciple’s fancy from a book, it is given by the murshid who knows the state of his murid, and can be increased or changed with him. Regularity before quantity: the manuals report the saying ‘the most beloved to God is the most constant act, be it ever so small’.

In the Qadiriya Boutchichiya path, the morning and evening liturgy bears the name wazifa, and the formulas proper to the path are transmitted at the pact. See the dhikr session for the collective practice.
